Gambling Warnings Out of Proportion
27 Jul 2006
History is not lacking for charismatic leaders who manage to stir up crowds with messages pertaining to the evil vices in our midst, and the need to stamp them out. Gambling has been one such ‘vice’ that has been the tool of many politicians to draw supporters. Jim Leech and Rob Goodlatte, for example, have been marginally successful in obtaining enough support from the US public to help them back anti gambling legislation that will ultimately ban online gambling in the country.
A disturbing point that needs to be raised, however, regards the facts that these politicians’ supporters are being told about gambling. Without a doubt, supporters have been frightened enough into voting against gambling due to the terrible fear that this activity will wreak havoc on American society and cause the destruction of family values. These supporters, however, need to be told the real truth about gambling. Recent statistics show that only 1.6% of all adults will ever develop an addiction of some sort – and that includes cigarettes, alcohol and gambling. Looking at the big picture, it is easy to see why the dangers about wagering are so often misconstrued and out of proportion.
In the real world, people who take up online gambling won’t go about losing their houses and cars every week. The average American is usually unable to get enough credit to enable him or her to spend thousands gambling at casinos. Before supporting this type of legislation, the public should read all the facts and then make an informed decision.
